Camshaft Position Sensor

Camshaft Position Sensors And Engine Timing

A camshaft position sensor sends the engine control system information about camshaft position. The control module uses that signal with other engine inputs to manage functions such as fuel injection and ignition timing.

A-Premium offers camshaft sensors for selected engines in individual and multi-piece packages. Select the correct engine and sensor location, then compare the connector and mounting with the part being replaced.

Choosing A Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement

Sensors can differ in connector shape, terminal count and installed position. Some engines have more than one camshaft sensor, so identify the affected bank or position where the application specifies it. A matching shape or number of terminals alone is not a fitment guarantee.

Hard starting, stalling or a camshaft-related trouble code can point to a signal problem. Use the vehicle's diagnostic procedure to identify the cause before selecting a replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How is a camshaft sensor different from a crankshaft sensor?

The camshaft sensor reports camshaft position, while the crankshaft sensor reports crankshaft position and speed. The engine control system uses their signals for different parts of engine management, and the sensors are not interchangeable by appearance.

Can a two-pin sensor replace a three-pin camshaft sensor?

Choose the sensor specified for the engine and location. A-Premium lists both two- and three-terminal examples, and their connectors and electrical requirements can differ; a sensor with the wrong terminal count is not a direct match.

Does a camshaft position code always mean the sensor is bad?

A code identifies a signal or circuit concern, not necessarily a failed sensor. Damaged wiring, a poor connection or a problem with the signal wheel can also affect the reading; test the circuit and associated components.

Are camshaft position sensors sold individually or in sets?

Both formats appear in the collection. Check the quantity and the intended positions in the selected package before ordering, especially on an engine with multiple sensors.

Can drivetrain configuration affect the correct sensor?

It can for a specific application. One listed sensor fits the 2006–2007 INFINITI G35 with rear-wheel drive but excludes all-wheel drive. Read the application notes for the exact vehicle rather than applying that restriction to every model.
