What Does a Gas Strut Do?

Published by: Nathan
Date of Publish:

Gas struts are mechanical instruments used to lift and support various components.  Gas struts provide sustenance to doors, hatches, lids, and horizontally hinged covers. Gas struts support car bonnets and freezer lids. These supportive instruments are essential, as they ease the whole working procedure. Toolboxes include various types and shapes of gas struts. Gas struts for their supportive opening also support even some toolboxes. Several types of struts are available, and tyre locks and plates are tightened through gas struts. They have a broad application in our daily lives. Gas struts are important because they contain high-pressured gas to bear heavy external pressure, which is why they are most commonly used.

Structure of gas struts:

Gas struts are rods that are attached to a piston, this rod moves within a permanently closed cylinder. This configuration forms a stable structure to ensure proper function. This cylinder contains pressurized nitrogen gas and oil.

Hydraulic oil:

The cylinder of struts consists of spring coils, which encase the tube filled with hydraulic oil. This increases the lifting capacity of the struts. The compressed air and oil ensure the compact structure of the rod. This fluid provides easy transmission of energy in the whole system.

The function of nitrogen gas in struts:

Compressed air or nitrogen gas is used in struts, which provides a compressible medium and damping control. The nitrogen gas helps equalize the pressure on both sides of the strut. It also provides resistance against corrosion to some extent.  A pressurized gas system makes struts efficient for use and requires no power cord. This is the specialty of these gas struts: they do not require an external energy source. Pressurized gas and oil help in movement and more significant support.

Usually, the pressure is kept between 1700 to 152000 KPa. This high-pressure nitrogen gas reduces oil from getting foggy during high-speed damping.

Piston system:

This system works in coordination with pressurized gas. This allows for the smooth opening and closing of objects. Pressurized gas pushes the piston so the bolt carrier moves in the opposite direction and starts extraction.

Are gas struts adjustable?

Various types of gas struts have various adjustments. Some gas struts have plungers that can be locked with the particular object, and then the rod is free to use or fix the object.  Some struts can be adjusted while using or installing. Auto-lock gas struts are also used in the suspension of vehicles.

How do gas struts work?

Gas struts have a simple working mechanism as they are built precisely. The rod must be pushed by force into the tube to convert the strut into a workable condition. This bushing reduces the volume inside the tube and increases the pressure. A small opening is present with the piston, which flows the gas throughout the piston. This helps in controlling the speed of extension. Struts also counter-balance the applications by providing push or pull force around the axis of rotation. Constant force is enough for struts to work. However, some struts also work with variable force.

How to use gas struts?

Certain factors affect the working capacity of gas struts. These factors should be kept in mind for appropriate results.

Gas struts should permanently be installed in a position that points the piston downward. This increases the oil lubrication in all parts of the cylinder. Appropriate fittings and angle joints should be used to avoid specific problems like couple jamming.

Another critical factor is the length of the gas strut. This depends upon the type of work and height of the hatch for which the strut is required. The strut should be 55% of the total height of the hatch which you want to open. Following this length specification, you can efficiently use the gas struts.

Where are gas struts used?

Gas struts can be seen daily, from furniture flaps to motor mechanics. As gas struts can be used in lifting, positioning, and lowering various objects, they have a wide application in our surroundings. Window panes, lids of boxes, especially in the kitchen, and some lids of freezers are commonly seen to be supported by gas struts. Opening car bonnets and various exercising machines use these supportable instruments. A car has four struts, one on each wheel. These struts automatically lock at a particular point when the full standard extension has reached.

How long can a gas strut be used?

A regular gas strut can be used for about 8-10 years. The efficiency keeps on falling after at least 5 years of usage. The oil lubrication and the pressure inside the cylinder decrease. The outer structure is usually made up of steel and its alloys, so it remains strong even after several years. If you feel that your gas strut is depressurized after several years of use, do not refill it with gas. You are advised to go for a new one for better supportive function.

Importance of gas struts:

Gas struts stabilize the objects for which these are used. Office chairs are typical examples in this case. Gas struts are installed by hand, it requires special care for installation and removal. They increase the support towards a particular object and ease the burden. Struts are integral parts of a car’s suspension, and they assemble different suspension parts.

Gas struts are made of fine materials so they can work efficiently for a more extended period. Bet you don’t want to see the situation of what happens when gas strut fails

Types of gas struts:

There are various gas struts and gas springs. Some are adjustable, others are automatically adjusted on installation. Locking and non-locking gas struts are distinguished in their work and are used according to the need. Other gas struts are oilless. But mostly internally, lubricated struts are used as they help in controlling pressure.

Do gas struts absorb shock?

When a gas strut is used in vehicle suspension, it contains a coiled spring. This supports the mass of the vehicle and acts as a shock absorber to dampen the violent vibrations. It also increases the steering control in cars on uneven road surfaces.

Are gas struts expensive?

Gas struts are available in motor shops, usually for car suspension. But other gas struts are also available. High-quality gas struts are a bit expensive. But, they lie in a reasonable range of price. You need to change or replace them after 8-10 years, so this expense can be an asset for your appliance. Replacement of struts is also not an expensive activity, it is cheaper than the first-time purchase of gas struts. You may also want to know how to repair a gas spring

Maintenance of gas struts:

After installation, it is necessary to maintain and re-gas the struts. Over time, struts lose gas pressure, which may affect their work. For example, opening a car bonnet would be difficult without the support of a strong strut. Struts can bear a lot of pressure to balance the structures. Struts need to be re-gassed after a particular period by mechanics. If your strut is damaged, you should immediately seek advice from a mechanic.

What measures should be taken during the installation and removal of gas struts?

Gas struts are filled with pressurized air, so special care should be administered while operating with them. Some factors that may cause damage sooner or later are as follows:

  1. Inappropriate configuration or structural design
  2. Incorrect application
  3. Damage due to heat, water, or misuse.

So, the person who installs gas struts should be skillful, and the surroundings should be isolated during installation and removal. Protective equipment should be used, and the manufacturer’s instructions should be followed. Specialized tools should be used, and struts should be protected against over-extension, side-loading, and excessive heat. Do not refill gas by yourself. Visit an expert team to avoid the risk of explosion. Special care should be taken during disposal, it should not be burnt in a fire. Do not crush or puncture pressurized struts. Appropriate methods should be used for depressurizing the cylinder. You should never lubricate the gas struts. Gas struts are essential components of vehicles. They should be adequately maintained to keep the vehicle in running condition. If parts of the car suspension are of acceptable quality and are appropriately maintained, the car will run smoothly. The market value of a car is high when its suspension is of fine quality. Customers should be vigilant while buying a vehicle and its integral parts. Regular car tuning is necessary to check if all parts work in coordination.

Gas struts are also used in various other applications in our daily life. Such gas struts are supportive in function and help maintain the structure by providing a counterbalance. Special care should be taken as negligence may cause damages. Damp and soggy areas should be avoided for gas strut installation; otherwise, the gas strut may corrode. Damage should not be treated by welding. Special instructions regarding gas struts and their disposal should be followed to avoid any danger of pressurized cylinders.
