Selecting An Electric Engine Water Pump

An electric engine water pump circulates coolant using an electric motor rather than a belt drive. The correct replacement depends on where the pump sits in the vehicle's cooling system, its hose connections, mounting and electrical connection. A vehicle may have more than one coolant pump serving different circuits.

Some electric pumps serve an engine cooling circuit; others supplement a mechanical pump or circulate coolant through another part of the vehicle's thermal-management system. A pump's location and circuit matter as much as the vehicle name because pumps in the same vehicle do not necessarily perform the same job.

Coolant moves heat through the circuit so it can be managed by the cooling system. The pump, hoses, coolant and other system components must work together; changing one part does not correct an unrelated leak or blockage.

The cooling system can be hot and pressurized. Let it cool and follow the vehicle's pressure-release procedure before opening it. Contamination or a coolant leak should be addressed as part of the repair, and the system needs the coolant specified for the vehicle.

After installation, fill and bleed the affected circuit according to its service procedure. Running an electric pump without coolant can damage it, and trapped air can interfere with circulation.
