Bad exhaust manifold symptoms

  • Exhaust leaks - Visible cracks, holes, or damage in the exhaust manifold, audible hissing or rumbling sounds coming from the engine compartment, and the smell of exhaust fumes inside the cabin.
  • Engine performance issues - Rough or uneven engine idle, hesitation or loss of power during acceleration, and decrease in fuel efficiency.
  • Increased emissions - Failed emissions or smog test, and increased visible exhaust smoke or soot.
  • Overheating - Elevated engine temperature readings and the smell of burning or overheated components.
  • Check engine light illumination - Diagnostic trouble codes related to the exhaust manifold or oxygen sensors.
  • Vibrations or noises - Rattling, banging, or other abnormal noises coming from the engine compartment, and increased overall engine vibrations.

A guide to exhaust manifold replacement

To begin the exhaust manifold replacement process, the vehicle must be safely raised and secured on jack stands or a lift. The mechanic will then disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent any electrical issues during the repair. Next, they will locate the exhaust manifold, which is typically situated at the top of the engine, and begin disconnecting it from the rest of the exhaust system. This involves unbolting the manifold from the cylinder head as well as detaching it from the catalytic converter or downpipe flanges.

With the old manifold removed, the mechanic will carefully inspect the mounting surface on the cylinder head to ensure it is free of any debris or damage. They will then install the new replacement manifold, taking care to properly align the bolt holes and create a tight seal with new gaskets. The manifold bolts are tightened to the manufacturer's specified torque, and the entire exhaust system is checked for leaks. Finally, the battery cable is reconnected, and the vehicle is lowered back to the ground, allowing the engine to be started and the repair to be thoroughly tested.
