Ignition Starter Switches
An ignition starter switch controls electrical circuits associated with the vehicle's ignition and starting system. On a vehicle with a conventional keyed switch, the accessory position powers selected accessories, the run position supports normal operation, and the start position requests cranking.
A-Premium offers replacement electrical switches for selected applications. Choose the switch that matches the vehicle's ignition system and its original mounting and connector.
Choosing An Automotive Ignition Switch
Switches can differ in terminal arrangement and how they attach to the steering column or housing. Similar-looking plugs are not enough to establish interchange; match the specific vehicle and switch design.
A no-crank condition, intermittent power or a difficult-to-turn key can have several causes. Diagnose the electrical circuit and mechanical lock before deciding which part needs replacement.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is the ignition switch the same as the key lock cylinder?
The lock cylinder is the mechanical part operated by the key; the electrical ignition switch controls circuits. Some vehicles use separate parts, so replacing the switch alone is different from replacing the keyed cylinder.
Why does the key return from Start to Run?
On many conventional keyed systems, Start is held only while the engine is being cranked. The key then returns to On or Run when released, allowing normal operation.
Can a weak battery cause a no-start condition?
A discharged battery or poor battery connection can prevent normal cranking even if the ignition switch works. Check battery condition and the starting circuit before selecting a switch.
Will two switches with the same number of terminals interchange?
Terminal count is only one detail. The connector shape, mounting and circuit arrangement must suit the application; the collection includes different six-, seven- and eleven-terminal designs.
Does replacing an ignition switch require key programming?
The need depends on the vehicle and which components are replaced. An electrical switch and a coded lock cylinder are distinct parts; follow the applicable service procedure for any required key learn or security steps.
