Choosing A Power Running Board Motor

A power running board motor moves a retractable step through its existing linkage. Replacements differ by driver or passenger side, electrical connection, and mounting arrangement. Some are sold as a single motor, while others cover both sides. Match the motor to the powered step already on the vehicle; the shape of a connector alone does not establish the complete application.

Fixed running boards and side steps provide a stepping surface without the powered moving mechanism. A motor replacement belongs to an existing power-step system.

How A Running Board Motor Works

On many vehicles, opening a door prompts the controller to extend the step, and closing the door starts its return. The motor turns the linkage that moves the board; the hinges, electrical supply and control inputs must also work for the step to travel normally.

When A Power Step Moves Slowly Or Stops

A slow, noisy or stationary step does not identify the failed part by itself. A wiring problem, a control input or resistance in the moving mechanism can affect travel. Compare the behavior on each side and inspect the mechanism and connections before ordering a motor.

Keep hands clear of the linkage while it can move. Use the vehicle's procedure to disable the power step before working around it, and support the vehicle at its specified jacking points rather than at the board or its motor.

Motor-Only And Paired Replacement Options

A-Premium offers single-side motors and paired sets for selected applications. A pair can supply both sides, but the package description determines which parts are included. Some motor listings specify that the bracket is not included, so inspect the existing mounting hardware and linkage when planning the repair.

For a compatible replacement, compare the side, mounting points and connector with the original assembly. Vehicle-specific notes can add another distinction, such as wheelbase, on particular applications.
