What Is a TPMS Sensor?

A TPMS sensor (tire pressure monitoring system sensor) measures real-time tire pressure and alerts the driver when air drops.

It maintains vehicle safety, stability, and accurate system performance across all wheels.

When Should You Replace a TPMS Sensor?

A sensor needs replacement when the internal battery expires, the valve stem corrodes, or the system shows persistent TPMS errors.

Replacing worn sensors ensures reliable pressure data and prevents failures during tire rotation or road use.

Direct vs. Indirect TPMS

Direct TPMS uses a valve-stem sensor for precise air-pressure readings, while indirect TPMS detects pressure changes through wheel speed.

Confirm system compatibility with your vehicle’s brand and model before purchasing a replacement sensor.

Specific steps to replace

  1. Safety first: Park safely, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.
  2. Remove the wheel: Use the lug wrench to take off the wheel.
  3. Locate the TPMS sensor: Find the sensor inside the rim, secured by a nut or screw.
  4. Remove the TPMS sensor: Carefully take out the sensor.
  5. Install the new sensor: Attach it to the valve stem or replace the entire valve stem if necessary.
  6. Secure the sensor: Use a torque wrench to tighten it properly.
  7. Reattach the wheel: Place the wheel back on, hand-tighten lug nuts, and torque them correctly.
  8. Lower the vehicle: If you use a jack, lower the vehicle.
  9. Check and adjust tire pressure: Verify and adjust tire pressure as per your vehicle's specifications.
  10. Reset TPMS: If needed, reset the TPMS system using the appropriate tool.
  11. Test the TPMS: Drive briefly to ensure the system is functioning, with the warning light off.
