Choosing An Air Suspension Compressor

An air suspension compressor supplies compressed air to the vehicle's suspension system. The replacement must suit its air connection, electrical supply and mounting arrangement. Some products include a bracket or related components; others are supplied without them.

Compare the compressor design with the installed system and the package contents. A compressor described for an air horn or another compressed-air use is not automatically a replacement for a vehicle's suspension pump.

How An Air Ride Compressor Supports Ride Height

The compressor builds the air supply used by the suspension. Depending on the system, valves direct air to the springs and a reservoir may store it. The controls and ride-height sensors determine when the system needs to adjust; the pump does not make that decision on its own.

A dryer helps limit moisture entering the air circuit. Its condition matters because water in the system can contribute to corrosion or problems in connected parts.

Air Loss And Compressor Diagnosis

Air leaks in a spring, line or fitting can make a compressor run more often as the system tries to maintain height. A low corner or a pump that runs repeatedly can also have other causes, including a valve, sensor or electrical fault.

Inspect the air circuit and electrical supply as part of the diagnosis. Replacing an overworked compressor without addressing an existing leak can leave the new unit under the same load.

Air Suspension Pump Package Contents

A-Premium offers suspension compressors with and without mounting brackets for selected applications. One configuration may include related hardware or a solenoid while another may require transfer of a serviceable part. Check the individual package and the condition of the original mounts before planning the repair.

The air line should connect at the correct location without being forced. Proper mounting and isolation also help avoid unnecessary movement or contact with surrounding components.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can a new compressor increase the vehicle payload rating?

Restoring the suspension's air supply does not change the vehicle manufacturer's payload or axle limits. A level ride height is not proof that a load is within those limits; use the ratings for the vehicle and its equipment.

Is a short compressor run after parking always a fault?

Some air suspension systems adjust ride height after the vehicle stops or its load changes. Repeated or extended operation, especially with a vehicle that sags, calls for checking the system for leaks and control faults.

Should the compressor relay be replaced too?

The relay and its circuit should be checked when a compressor is serviced. Follow the instructions for the replacement and the vehicle: some repairs call for a new relay, and a relay is not automatically included with every pump.

Can I install a larger fuse if the compressor fuse blows?

Use the specified fuse rating. A higher-rated fuse can leave wiring unprotected and create a fire risk. A fuse that blows again needs diagnosis of the circuit and compressor rather than a larger replacement.

Can I drive when the air suspension is fully lowered by a fault?

An abnormal suspension height can reduce clearance and affect the vehicle's behavior. Follow the vehicle's warning and service instructions; if normal height cannot be restored safely, arrange assistance before driving.
