What Does a Bad Upstream O2 Sensor Sound Like?

Start by determining whether you are hearing a change in combustion or a mechanical noise from the exhaust. Then use codes and live data to decide whether the oxygen sensor is reporting the problem correctly or creating inaccurate data.

  1. Identify the location. Determine whether the sound is strongest under the hood, near the exhaust manifold, around the catalytic converter, or farther down the exhaust pipe.
  2. Note when it happens. Record whether it occurs only during a cold start, at idle, during acceleration, after warm-up, or over bumps.
