How to read an engine oil dipstick?

An engine oil dipstick is a tool utilized to measure and assess the oil level in a vehicle's engine. It typically consists of a long, slender metal rod with a handle and markings along its length. The primary purpose of the engine oil dipstick is to aid car owners or mechanics in checking the engine's oil level to ensure it has the necessary lubrication for proper functioning. By using the engine oil dipstick, individuals can conveniently and accurately determine the oil level, which is crucial for maintaining optimal engine lubrication.

To check the oil level, park the vehicle on a flat surface, turn off the engine, and allow it to cool. Look for a brightly colored or labeled handle, pull the dipstick out, wipe it clean, and reinsert it completely. Pull it out again and check the oil level using the "Full" and "Low" marks. If it's between two markers, it's fine. If it is below the "Low" mark, please add oil.

Note: check the color and consistency of the oil. It should be clear amber and smooth. Dirty, sandy, or creamy oils may indicate a problem.

Engine oil dipstick FAQs

Question: When should you check the engine oil level?

We recommend opening the hood every few weeks and always before long trips. If you live in a hot country, measure the oil level in the morning or evening. If you live in a cold country/region, checking the vehicle's engine oil when the outdoor temperature is freezing may affect your oil reading.

Question: Where is the engine oil dipstick in my new car?

Mostly, the engine oil dipstick is usually located within the engine compartment, typically positioned near one side of the engine. Now American manufacturers are following the trend set by European carmakers who have all but removed the dipsticks in the engine compartment.

Question: What to do when you notice the engine is overfilled with oil?

If you notice the engine is overfilled with oil, immediately turn off the engine and drain the excess oil by locating the oil drain plug underneath the engine. Place a drain pan below it, loosen the plug, let the excess oil drain out, and recheck the oil level to ensure it is within the recommended range.
