Engine Oil Filter Types
An engine oil filter removes contaminants from oil as it circulates through the lubrication system. Some engines use a spin-on canister that is replaced as a unit; others use a cartridge element inside a reusable housing. Choose the type and part specified for the engine.
A-Premium offers both cartridge and spin-on filters for selected applications, including single filters and multipacks. A cartridge, its housing and any required seal are separate parts to check when planning service.
Matching A Motor Oil Filter To The Engine
Spin-on filters can differ in thread, sealing surface, housing size and internal valve requirements. A cartridge must match the housing and sealing arrangement for its engine. A filter that appears similar or threads on is not necessarily the correct replacement.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What does an oil filter bypass valve do?
In systems designed with one, a bypass valve can allow oil around the filter media when flow through it is restricted, such as during a cold start. Depending on the design, the valve can be in the filter or the housing; its required setting is application-specific.
Does every replacement oil filter include a seal?
Package contents vary. One A-Premium cartridge listing specifies that no gasket or seal is included, while a listed spin-on filter specifies a seal. Check the selected part and obtain the correct seal if the service requires it.
Why should the old spin-on filter gasket be checked during removal?
An old gasket can remain stuck to the engine when the filter is removed. Installing the new filter over it can create a double-gasket condition and a poor seal, so confirm that the old gasket came off and inspect the sealing surface.
Can I use a 10,000-mile filter for every oil-change interval?
Follow the vehicle's maintenance schedule and oil-life guidance. A filter's stated protection distance does not override a shorter service requirement for time, operating conditions or the engine manufacturer.
Is the oil filter interchangeable if its thread fits?
The thread is only one requirement. Gasket dimensions, filter size and the required bypass or anti-drainback arrangement can differ. Select the filter specified for the engine and its housing rather than by thread alone.
