Exterior Door Handles & Outer Door Controls

Exterior Door Handles And Latch Operation

An exterior door handle gives you a way to operate the door latch from outside the vehicle. Depending on the design, the handle works through a linkage or a vehicle's entry system; the latch must be released for the door to open.

A-Premium offers individual outside door handles and multi-piece sets for selected vehicles. Some sets include interior or tailgate handles as well, so match the actual contents to the doors being repaired.

Choosing An Outside Door Handle

Check front or rear position, driver or passenger side, finish and the door's lock or entry equipment. Some handles have a keyhole and others do not; a multi-door set may contain different pieces for each location.

A handle that moves without opening the door can involve the handle, linkage or latch. Identify the failed part and follow the vehicle's repair procedure, including any electrical or keyless-entry steps specific to that door.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does pulling an exterior door handle unlock a locked door?

A conventional locked door must be unlocked before the handle releases the latch. Some passive-entry systems can recognize a key and unlock through a handle sensor; operation depends on the vehicle's equipment.

Does a handle with a keyhole include a lock cylinder?

A keyhole describes an opening in the handle; it does not establish that a lock cylinder or keys are included. Check the package contents and the condition of the existing lock parts.

Are all four handles in a set identical?

A set may include different door positions and keyhole arrangements. One A-Premium four-piece Silverado set lists a keyhole for the front driver handle and none for the other three. Match each piece to its designated door.

Can the same outside handle fit both front sides?

Some are listed that way, but many are side-specific. One Mazda/Ford handle is identified for front left or right, while other listings name a single driver or passenger position. Follow the exact application.

Does an exterior door handle set include the latch?

The handle and latch are separate parts of the door mechanism. A handle listing does not automatically include the latch, cable or linkage; check the package for the repair being planned.
