Headlight Control Modules And Lamp Functions

A headlight control module manages an electrical function in a particular headlamp system. Depending on the vehicle and lamp, separate electronics can control a light source, a lighting function or headlamp movement. One module should not be assumed to operate every exterior light.

Identify the module's function, the installed lamp type and the replacement part number before selecting a headlamp control unit. A-Premium offers single modules and two-piece packages for selected applications.

Choosing And Replacing A Headlamp Control Unit

Modules that look alike can serve different lamp systems. Match the vehicle application, part number, connectors and mounting arrangement to the unit being replaced. LED control electronics and a xenon ballast have different tasks; choose the component identified for the installed system.

Module location also varies with the lamp and vehicle. Use the applicable service procedure to reach the unit without damaging the housing or its connections.

Diagnosing A Headlight Control Module

A nonworking light, flickering or a lighting warning can have several causes. Check the light source, wiring, connectors and power supply along with the relevant fault information before replacing the control unit.

If moisture or impact damage is present, inspect the lamp housing and connections as well. A replacement module cannot correct an unresolved leak or damaged wiring.

Are LED headlight drivers and HID ballasts interchangeable?

They are intended for different light-source systems and perform different electrical tasks. Match the unit to the vehicle's installed headlamp and specified part number instead of selecting by housing shape alone.

Will a new headlight module need programming?

Some vehicles require coding or programming after replacement; others use a different procedure. The lamp type, vehicle and control unit determine the required setup, so confirm that procedure before ordering or installing the part.

Can a headlight module be sold as a pair?

Packages differ. Some A-Premium listings specify one module and others specify two. Confirm both the quantity and the applications covered by the selected package before planning a repair on both sides.

Does a lighting fault code prove that the module is defective?

A code identifies a system condition that needs diagnosis; it does not by itself establish which part must be replaced. Supply voltage, connector contacts, communication and the light source are among the items to check for the particular fault.

Does replacing a control unit include replacing the entire headlight?

A control unit is a separate electrical component, while a headlamp assembly contains additional lighting and housing parts. Package contents vary, so identify whether the needed repair is the module, the lamp assembly or another component.
