How Does an Intercooler Work?

The intercooler's job is to cool down the air after it has been compressed by the turbo or supercharger but before it enters the engine, and turbochargers work by compressing air and increasing its density before it reaches the cylinders. That compression creates heat?lots of it. We're talking 250�F to 400�F+ temperatures coming out of your turbo.

Compressing air generates heat, and the exact temperature varies depending on boost pressure, engine speed, and turbocharger efficiency, but in some cases this temperature can be well above 200 degrees Celsius (392 degrees Fahrenheit), and air temperatures at this level will inhibit the combustion process. Hot air is less dense than cool air, which means less oxygen per cylinder and less power.

Your intercooler fixes this. It uses aluminum fins and tubes to pull heat out of the compressed air before it hits your engine. Ram air flowing through the intercooler as you drive transfers that heat to the atmosphere. The result? By cooling the air, the intercooler reduces the chances of knocking and allows for more air to be forced into the engine which can increase power output, and cooling the air can also help reduce emissions.

Signs Your Intercooler is Failing

Low boost pressure is your first clue. If your boost gauge shows lower numbers than normal or boost builds slowly, your intercooler core is probably damaged or leaking. Physical inspection reveals the truth?bent fins from road debris, crushed cores from accidents, or cracked end tanks from heat stress.

Reduced engine performance means noticeable drop in power and acceleration due to less effective cooling of compressed air, which results in lower air density and less oxygen for combustion. You paid for turbo power?a bad intercooler steals it from you.

Intercooler vs Radiator: What's the Difference?

People confuse these all the time. Your radiator cools engine coolant to prevent overheating. Your intercooler cools compressed intake air to make more power. Both are heat exchangers, but they do completely different jobs.

Radiators handle hot liquid at 180-220�F. Intercoolers handle compressed air at 100-350�F+ under pressure. Radiator failure means your engine overheats in minutes. Intercooler failure means you lose power and risk detonation damage. Both systems are critical but address totally different problems in your engine.
