The intercooler's job is to cool down the air after it has been compressed by the turbo or supercharger but before it enters the engine, and turbochargers work by compressing air and increasing its density before it reaches the cylinders. Compressing air generates heat, and the exact temperature varies depending on boost pressure, engine speed, and turbocharger efficiency, but in some cases this temperature can be well above 200 degrees Celsius (392 degrees Fahrenheit), and air temperatures at this level will inhibit the combustion process. Hot air is less dense than cool air, which means less oxygen per cylinder and less power.
Your intercooler fixes this. It uses aluminum fins and tubes to pull heat out of the compressed air before it hits your engine. Ram air flowing through the intercooler as you drive transfers that heat to the atmosphere. The result? By cooling the air, the intercooler reduces the chances of knocking and allows for more air to be forced into the engine which can increase power output, and cooling the air can also help reduce emissions.
