Running Boards for Trucks | Pickup Step Bars

Choosing Running Boards And Side Steps

Running boards and side steps provide a stepping surface for entering and leaving a taller vehicle. Choose a set for the body and cab configuration, not just the make of the truck.

The current selection includes fixed bars for specific truck and SUV applications. Compare the intended driver and passenger positions, mounting points and package contents with the vehicle before ordering.

Step Bar Shape And Mounting

Side step bars vary in shape, width and finish. The brackets locate the stepping surface beside the vehicle, so the installed assembly must clear nearby body trim and suit the specified mounting points.

Some sets include brackets and fasteners, while the required pieces are specified by each package. Check the supplied parts and installation instructions before removing or transferring existing hardware.

Fixed Side Steps And Powered Running Boards

A fixed side step remains in position as a passenger enters or leaves. A powered running board uses a separate moving mechanism and controls. They provide access in different ways, and a fixed bar does not become a powered assembly by adding a motor alone.

Consider how the step's position relates to the doors, rocker panel and existing accessories. The right choice is the one designed for the installed vehicle configuration and intended mounting points.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why does cab size matter when choosing truck running boards?

Cab length changes the distance along the body and can change the location of mounting points. A bar intended for a regular cab may be too short or have the wrong brackets for a crew cab, even on the same truck model.

Are both sides included in a running board set?

Some sets contain a driver-side and passenger-side bar; other packages may be described differently. Check the listed quantity and positions to make sure the order covers the sides being serviced.

Can a side step be used as a vehicle lifting point?

Use the jacking points identified by the vehicle manufacturer. A side step is intended as an access surface, and supporting the vehicle at the bar or its brackets can damage the assembly or create an unsafe lift.

How much weight can a running board support?

Use the load rating supplied for the specific product and installation. The width or appearance of a bar does not establish its capacity, and a rating should not be assumed when it is not provided.

What affects the price of side steps?

Material, finish, the number of steps and the mounting kit can affect the cost. Vehicle-specific designs and professional installation can add to the total. Compare what each package includes rather than relying on a fixed price range.
