What is a starter motor?

A starter is a tool used to rotate (crank) an internal combustion engine so that it can start running on its power. It is also known as a self-starting, cranking motor, or beginning motor. Pneumatic, hydraulic, or electric starters are all possible. Internal combustion engines are feedback systems that, once they're running, depend on the momentum of one cycle to start the next. In a four-stroke engine, the third stroke transfers energy from the fuel to power the exhaust stroke, the first two strokes of the subsequent cycle (intake, compression), as well as the external load.
