Suspension Coil Springs

Suspension coil springs support vehicle weight and allow the wheels to move as the suspension travels. The spring compresses and rebounds over changes in the road, while a shock absorber or strut damps that movement. The two components work together but perform different jobs.

A-Premium offers front and rear springs for selected applications. Choose the spring intended for the suspension position and vehicle configuration, and check whether the package contains one spring or a pair.

Choosing Replacement Coil Springs

Spring design is matched to the weight and geometry of the suspension. A spring that looks similar or has a similar unloaded length may have a different rate or shape, so compare the vehicle application and mounting arrangement as well as the position.

A vehicle that sits low or unevenly may have a damaged or fatigued spring, but tire condition and other suspension components also affect the inspection. Identify the cause and check the spring seats and surrounding parts before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the difference between a coil spring and a shock absorber?

The spring stores energy as it compresses; the shock absorber resists suspension motion and helps control the spring's rebound. Excessive bouncing can call for a damper inspection, while ride-height concerns also call for checking the springs and their seats.

Can front coil springs be used at the rear?

Front and rear suspension positions may use springs with different shapes, rates and mounting arrangements. Select the spring specified for the position rather than assuming the two locations share a part.

Will matching the free length give the correct ride height?

Free length alone does not establish installed ride height. Spring rate, the load on the spring and suspension geometry also affect the result, so choose an application-matched spring rather than by length alone.

Does a pair of coil springs include the spring seats or struts?

A spring pair describes the springs; it does not automatically include struts, seats or mounting hardware. Check the contents of the selected listing and inspect reusable parts before the repair.

Can a coil spring be replaced without a spring compressor?

The procedure depends on the suspension design. A compressed spring stores considerable energy, so use the vehicle-specific service procedure and the correct equipment; some assemblies require a suitable spring compressor for safe disassembly.
