Choosing A Fuel Tank Sending Unit

A fuel sending unit must match the tank, electrical connection and fuel-level system in the vehicle. On a vehicle with more than one tank, the front or rear position can also change the required part. Compare the float arrangement, fuel-line connections and mounting position for the tank being serviced.

A-Premium offers sending units with different combinations of floats, gaskets, strainers or return connections for selected applications. Match the connections and mounting arrangement to the tank being serviced.

How A Fuel Gauge Sending Unit Works

In a common float-type design, the float moves as the fuel level changes and the sender produces an electrical signal for the gauge system. The vehicle interprets that signal to display an estimated level. The sender's travel and electrical characteristics need to suit the tank and gauge.

The sender measures level; a fuel pump supplies fuel to the engine. They can be separate parts or appear in the same tank assembly, depending on the vehicle.

Inaccurate Fuel Gauge Readings

An inaccurate or fluctuating fuel gauge makes it harder to judge how much fuel remains. Compare the actual fuel level with the sender and gauge behavior before choosing a replacement.

Working inside a fuel tank requires the vehicle's fuel-system safety and service procedures because fuel and vapor can ignite.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why can a fuel gauge stay on full or empty?

A stuck float, a damaged sender, a wiring or connector problem, or a fault in the gauge circuit can affect the reading. The correct repair follows from checking the sender's movement and signal as well as the rest of the circuit.

Does a fuel sending unit always include a fuel pump?

Package contents vary. Some A-Premium sending units list a float and other service pieces but explicitly do not include a pump. A complete pump assembly is a different purchase, so check which components the selected part supplies.

Why does the sender resistance range matter?

The gauge system is designed to interpret a particular electrical signal as the fuel level changes. A sender with the wrong characteristics can give an inaccurate reading even if the float moves freely. Match the unit to the vehicle's specified system.

Can front and rear fuel tank senders be interchanged?

They should be matched to the tank and position specified for the vehicle. Tank shape, float travel and line connections can differ, so a sender for one tank is not automatically correct for the other.

Does a noisy fuel pump prove the sending unit is bad?

The pump and level sender have different jobs. Pump noise does not by itself diagnose a faulty fuel-level signal, and replacing the sender alone will not necessarily correct a pump problem. Check the component associated with the actual symptom.
