Parking Brake Cable Functions And Positions

A parking brake cable transfers the force from the vehicle's parking brake control to the brake mechanism. Depending on the layout, front, intermediate and rear cables can perform different parts of that job. Identify the damaged section and its position before ordering.

A-Premium offers individual rear cables and driver-and-passenger sets for selected vehicles. Cable length, end fittings, mounting points and routing are specific to the application; a similar length does not make a cable universal.

Matching And Servicing A Parking Brake Cable

Compare the attachment ends, protective conduit and bracket arrangement with the existing cable. A listed pair may have different lengths for the left and right sides. Some products include mounting brackets and others do not, so check the individual package.

A cable that binds, has detached or has damaged mounting hardware can affect brake application or release. Inspect the parking brake handle and release control and the wheel-end mechanism as well. Secure the vehicle against rolling during service and follow the specified routing and adjustment procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can the left and right parking brake cables be different lengths?

They can. One A-Premium rear pair lists different conduit lengths for its driver and passenger cables. Match the side and routing for the particular vehicle rather than assuming a pair contains identical cables.

Does every replacement cable include mounting brackets?

Package contents differ. Some A-Premium cables list a mounting bracket, while one rear pair specifies that the bracket is not included. Check the selected product and the condition of the existing attachments.

Is a parking brake cable the same as a brake hose?

A parking brake cable mechanically transmits a pulling force. A hydraulic brake hose carries brake fluid in the service-brake circuit. They have different connections and cannot substitute for one another.

Do electric parking brakes ever use cables?

Some electric parking brakes use a motor to pull cables, while other designs use actuators at the brake calipers. Identify the installed system and select a cable specifically listed for it; an electric switch does not establish which layout is present.

Why does cable routing matter after replacement?

A cable must move freely and stay seated in its brackets and end connections. Incorrect routing or a loose attachment can affect application and release. Follow the vehicle's routing and adjustment specifications rather than tightening the cable by feel alone.
