Toyota Matrix Power Brake Booster

2 items

A power brake booster helps reduce the effort needed at the brake pedal. Replacements must match the vehicle's brake system, pedal linkage and master-cylinder mounting. The selection includes both vacuum and hydraulic boost designs, which rely on different sources of assistance.

Choosing A Power Brake Booster

A power brake booster helps reduce the effort needed at the brake pedal. Replacements must match the vehicle's brake system, pedal linkage and master-cylinder mounting. The selection includes both vacuum and hydraulic boost designs, which rely on different sources of assistance.

A-Premium offers boosters for selected applications with different connections and mounting arrangements. Compare the parts and connections required for the installed brake system before planning the repair.

Vacuum And Hydraulic Brake Boosters

A vacuum booster uses a pressure difference to assist the driver's pedal effort. Its vacuum source can depend on engine operation or a separate vacuum pump, according to the vehicle's design. Hoses and a check valve are also part of the vacuum supply path.

A hydraulic booster uses pressurized fluid for assistance. On some vehicles it shares a pump and fluid circuit with the power steering system. These designs need the connections and components specified for the installed brake system.

Planning Brake Booster Replacement

A booster works with the pedal linkage and master cylinder, so the pushrod and mounting arrangement must be correct for the application. The service procedure will also specify any work needed on the hydraulic circuit.

Brake service is safety-critical. Use the vehicle's repair procedure and verify the system's operation after the work; a new booster does not correct an unresolved vacuum, fluid or linkage problem.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does a hard brake pedal always mean the booster has failed?

A loss of assistance can make the pedal harder to press, but a vacuum source, hose, check valve or hydraulic supply problem can also be involved. Diagnose the assist system before selecting a replacement booster.

Is the brake master cylinder included with the booster?

Package contents vary. Some A-Premium boosters are sold without a master cylinder; a combined assembly may be described differently. Check the contents and the condition of the existing master cylinder before ordering.

Will the brakes need bleeding after booster replacement?

Bleeding is required when the hydraulic circuit is opened or when the service procedure calls for it. The exact work varies with the vehicle and whether the master cylinder or brake lines are disturbed. Follow the specified bleeding and system-check procedure.

Can a power-steering problem affect a hydraulic brake booster?

On a design that shares the power-steering pump with the brake booster, a problem in that hydraulic supply can affect both forms of assistance. Check the pump, fluid and related lines as part of diagnosis rather than assuming the booster itself is the only fault.

Is it safe to keep driving with reduced brake assistance?

Reduced assistance can require substantially more pedal force. Stop safely and have the braking system inspected before continuing; the correct response depends on the vehicle and the nature of the fault.
