Choosing Running Boards And Side Steps

Running boards and side steps provide a stepping surface for entering and leaving a taller vehicle. Choose a set for the body and cab configuration, not just the make of the truck.

The current selection includes fixed bars for specific truck and SUV applications. Compare the intended driver and passenger positions, mounting points and package contents with the vehicle before ordering.

Step Bar Shape And Mounting

Side step bars vary in shape, width and finish. The brackets locate the stepping surface beside the vehicle, so the installed assembly must clear nearby body trim and suit the specified mounting points.

Some sets include brackets and fasteners, while the required pieces are specified by each package. Check the supplied parts and installation instructions before removing or transferring existing hardware.

Fixed Side Steps And Powered Running Boards

A fixed side step remains in position as a passenger enters or leaves. A powered running board uses a separate moving mechanism and controls. They provide access in different ways, and a fixed bar does not become a powered assembly by adding a motor alone.
