How is an idler pulley different from a tensioner pulley?

An idler guides the belt along its route. A tensioner pulley works with a tensioning mechanism that applies force to the belt; replacing an idler does not replace a worn tensioner arm or spring.

Does a tensioner assembly include a serpentine belt?

A tensioner and the drive belt are separate parts. A tensioner listing does not by itself establish that a belt is included; check the contents if both are needed for the service.

Why can a new serpentine belt still make noise?

A worn pulley bearing, misalignment, inadequate tension or fluid contamination can create noise even with a new belt. Inspect the pulleys and tensioner rather than treating the new belt as the only possible cause.

Is a timing belt tensioner the same as an accessory belt tensioner?

They serve different belt systems. An accessory tensioner controls the drive belt for external engine accessories; a timing system has its own parts and service requirements. Select the part for the system being repaired.

Why should the belt routing be checked during replacement?

The belt must sit correctly on each pulley. An incorrectly seated belt can track off the pulley or become damaged; use the vehicle's routing diagram and service instructions for that drive system.
