Brake shoes are curved friction components that press against the inside of a brake drum. They serve a different brake arrangement from disc pads, which contact a rotor. Identify the actual brake system and position before selecting replacement shoes.

Brake Shoes For Drum Brake Systems

Brake shoes are curved friction components that press against the inside of a brake drum. They serve a different brake arrangement from disc pads, which contact a rotor. Identify the actual brake system and position before selecting replacement shoes.

A-Premium offers rear drum-brake shoe sets for selected cars and trucks as well as shoes listed for a specific ATV application. Vehicle type and brake configuration both matter: a rear-wheel location alone does not establish that a car has service drum brakes.

Choosing A Brake Shoe Set

Match the shoes to the vehicle's brake design, drum size and required position. Some applications within a model line use rear drum brakes while others use discs. Follow the configuration stated for the selected part.

Service Brake Shoes And Parking Brake Shoes

Some vehicles use a drum brake for regular braking. Others use disc brakes for regular braking and a separate small drum-in-hat mechanism for the parking brake. Select shoes for the system being repaired; a parking-brake shoe is not automatically a service drum-brake shoe.

Noise, weak braking or poor parking-brake holding can have several causes, including worn friction parts or related hardware. Inspect the complete affected mechanism and follow the specified service and adjustment procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why do drum diameter and shoe width matter?

The shoe and its friction lining must match the drum's internal dimensions and the brake assembly's mounting geometry. Some vehicle applications specify a particular drum diameter; use that condition together with the vehicle and brake configuration when selecting shoes.

Does a brake shoe set include springs and adjusters?

The shoes and their hardware are separate components. Some packages may include hardware, but a shoe-set title alone does not establish its contents. Inspect the springs and adjusters and check the package before starting the repair.

How many wheels does a four-piece brake shoe set cover?

Some A-Premium four-shoe sets are listed for the rear driver and passenger sides of particular vehicles. The number and positions in the product description determine its coverage; do not assume every four-piece package fits every axle.

Are ceramic brake shoes the same as carbon-ceramic brakes?

Ceramic is the friction-material description on some listed shoe sets. It does not by itself mean that the vehicle uses carbon-ceramic rotors or that the shoes share a particular performance rating. Match the specified part to the brake system.

Can brake shoe noise come from a part other than the lining?

Springs, retainers, adjusters and drum condition can also affect brake operation. NHTSA describes a retainer-spring problem that caused parking shoes to drag on certain vehicles. Identify the source instead of assuming noise alone proves the shoes need replacement.
