OUTThe camshaft position sensor (CMP sensor) plays a key role in a modern internal combustion engine. It monitors the position and speed of the camshaft, which controls the opening and closing of the engine's intake and exhaust valves.
Location: The camshaft position sensor is typically located near the camshaft in the engine's cylinder head or valve cover. Its exact location may vary depending on the vehicle's make and model.
Function: The CMP sensor's primary function is to monitor the position and speed of the camshaft. It sends this information to the engine control unit (ECU) or engine control module (ECM). The ECU uses this data to determine the optimal timing for fuel injection and ignition, ensuring efficient engine operation.
Hall Effect Sensor: Many CMP sensors use the Hall effect principle, which generates a voltage signal based on the camshaft's position.
Magnetic Pickup Sensor: Some vehicles use a magnetic pickup sensor that generates a voltage signal as the camshaft's lobes pass by it.
A failing or faulty camshaft position sensor (CMP sensor) can lead to various symptoms and issues in your vehicle's engine performance. Recognizing these symptoms can help diagnose and address the problem in a timely manner. Check the following:
P0013 indicates an electrical fault in the Bank 1 exhaust camshaft actuator circuit. Learn common causes like damaged wiring or failed solenoids, safe driving limits, and a step-by-step diagnostic guide to fix the issue correctly.
P0008 indicates a Bank 1 engine timing mismatch. Learn the likely causes, when to stop driving, and how to confirm the fault before replacing timing components or sensors.
P0016 signals cam/crank timing mismatch. Don't just swap sensors; causes range from low oil and VVT faults to jumped chains. Learn safe diagnosis steps, identify root causes, and fix synchronization issues without replacing good parts.
Fix P0012 Camshaft Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 1). Diagnose oil, VVT valves, wiring, or mechanical faults. Avoid unnecessary part swaps with our step-by-step guide to restore performance and prevent engine damage.
This guide breaks down everything you need to know about a Camshaft Position Sensor circuit malfunction, which disrupts your engine's timing and triggers the check engine light.
