GMC Sierra 2500 HD Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor

What is an exhaust gas temperature sensor?

Exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensors are like the engine's thermometer. They're placed in your car's exhaust system, near the engine, to measure how hot the exhaust gases are getting. Why does this matter?

1. Better performance: EGT sensors send information to your car's brain (the engine control unit) to fine-tune things like how much fuel is injected and when, so your engine runs at its best.
2. Emission control: They also help control emissions. By knowing the exhaust temperature, your car can adjust things to reduce harmful pollutants coming out of the tailpipe.
3. Safety: EGT sensors act as a kind of safety guard. If the exhaust gets too hot, it can signal your car's computer to take action and prevent overheating or damage.

EGT sensors help the car run smoothly, save fuel, and keep the environment cleaner, all by keeping an eye on how hot things are in the engine's exhaust system.

Exhaust gas temperature sensor failure symptoms

Think of your exhaust gas temperature sensor as a kind of "temperature detective" inside your car's engine. Its job is to keep an eye on how hot things are getting in your exhaust system. When this sensor isn't working as it should, you might notice a few things:

• Check engine light: First, your car might throw a little warning sign on the dashboard, often known as the check engine light. It's like a signal that something's not quite right.
• Lackluster performance: Your car might not feel as peppy as usual. It could be slower to accelerate, and overall, it just won't have that zip you're used to.
• Thirsty for fuel: When the EGT sensor goes haywire, your car might start sipping fuel like it's a bottomless cup. This means you'll notice fewer miles per gallon.
• Environmental impact: If the EGT sensor isn't doing its job, your car might release more pollution into the air, which isn't great for the environment.
• Rough idle: Sometimes, when the EGT sensor acts up, your car might not idle smoothly. It might shake or vibrate when you're sitting still.
• Too hot to handle: On the flip side, if the sensor gets things wrong, your car's exhaust might get too hot, potentially causing problems or damage.
• No more safety net: The EGT sensor also helps keep your engine safe from overheating. If it's not working, you lose that extra layer of protection.

If you notice any of these signs, it's a good idea to have a local mechanic take a look under the hood to sort things out.
