Choosing A Power Steering Pump

Power steering pumps are offered with different combinations of reservoir and pulley. The hydraulic connections, pulley attachment and mounting arrangement also need to suit the vehicle. A pump supplied with one accessory does not necessarily include the other, so decide which parts of the existing assembly are being replaced before selecting a package.

Match the pump to the vehicle's hydraulic steering system and its required line connections. A correct-looking housing alone cannot establish that the drive or hose fittings match.

How A Hydraulic Power Steering Pump Works

The pump circulates power steering fluid and creates hydraulic pressure for the steering assist. The steering mechanism uses that pressure to reduce the effort needed at the wheel. The reservoir holds fluid for the circuit, while hoses carry fluid between components.

Many hydraulic pumps are driven by a belt and pulley. The belt path and pulley alignment must suit the original setup; the pump cannot compensate for a damaged drive belt or a leaking line.

Whining, Heavy Steering And Fluid Leaks

A whining sound, stiff steering or fluid around the pump can point to a problem in the hydraulic system. They do not prove the pump is the only damaged part. Low fluid, air entering a line, a slipping belt or a leak elsewhere can produce symptoms that need further inspection.

Locate the source of any leak and assess the condition of the belt, hoses and fluid before replacing parts. A sudden loss of steering assistance increases steering effort, so address it promptly and follow the vehicle's service guidance.

A-Premium Power Steering Pump Configurations

A-Premium offers pumps with a pulley, a reservoir, or both on selected applications. A pump without a reservoir may require transfer of a serviceable existing reservoir; a pump without a pulley may require the correct original pulley or a separately supplied part.

Pulley attachment matters as well as diameter and belt grooves. Some pump shafts use a press-on pulley, which needs the appropriate service tools and installation procedure. Confirm the required fittings, seals and accessory contents for the selected pump.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I reuse the original power steering reservoir?

A reservoir can sometimes be transferred when it is the correct part and is clean and undamaged. Inspect its connections and sealing points before reuse. If the reservoir is cracked or contaminated, include the needed repair parts rather than transferring the problem to the replacement pump.

Does a pump with a pulley also include the belt?

A pulley and a drive belt are separate parts. A listing that includes the pulley does not automatically include the belt. Check the package contents and inspect the existing belt's condition when the pump is being serviced.

Why is air removed after power steering pump replacement?

Air trapped in the hydraulic circuit can contribute to noise and irregular assistance. The system must be filled and bled using the procedure for the vehicle and then checked for leaks. The sequence and fluid level should follow the applicable service instructions.

Which fluid should go into the steering system?

Use the fluid specification required by the vehicle manufacturer. Power steering systems do not all use the same fluid, and an unsuitable fluid can affect seals and operation. The correct specification is found in the vehicle's service information.

Will a hydraulic pump fit a vehicle with electric-only steering?

An electric-only steering system uses an electric assist mechanism instead of a conventional hydraulic pump and fluid circuit. Confirm the type of steering assist installed on the vehicle before choosing a replacement pump.
