Choose Brake Pads for the Exact Brake Configuration

Brake pads are not universal, even when two vehicles share the same year and model. The correct set must match the axle position and the vehicle’s specific brake configuration. Before ordering, confirm the year, make, model, trim, engine, front or rear position, and every fitment note shown on the product page.

After selecting your vehicle, verify:

  • Front, rear, or front-and-rear installation position
  • Rotor diameter or factory brake package when specified
  • Manual or electronic parking-brake notes
  • Pad shape, dimensions, and wear-sensor provision
  • Included pad quantity, clips, shims, lubricant, and other hardware

These checks help prevent a common brake-job delay: removing the wheel and caliper only to discover that the replacement pad shape, sensor connection, or included hardware does not match.

Do You Need Front, Rear, or Front-and-Rear Brake Pads?

Brake pads should normally be replaced as an axle set—both front wheels or both rear wheels—so braking remains balanced from side to side. A four-piece set commonly services one axle, with an inner and outer pad at each wheel. An eight-piece set commonly covers the front and rear axles. Package quantities can vary, so confirm the stated installation position and included items.

Front brake pads often wear faster because the front axle handles a large share of the vehicle’s braking load, but the rear pads should still be inspected. Choose the repair scope from actual pad thickness, wear pattern, rotor condition, and service history.

A complete front-and-rear set makes sense when both axles are close to their service limits, the maintenance history is unknown, or you want to complete one planned brake service instead of placing another order soon afterward.

Ceramic or Semi-Metallic Brake Pads?

Friction material changes how the brakes feel, sound, manage heat, and create dust. The right choice is the material specified for the application and suited to how the vehicle is used.

Ceramic brake pads are a popular choice for daily-driven cars, crossovers, and many light-duty vehicles. They are often selected for smooth operation, lower visible wheel dust, and reduced noise during normal commuting.

Semi-metallic brake pads generally transfer heat effectively and may better suit heavier vehicles, frequent towing, repeated hard stops, or demanding terrain. Depending on the vehicle and pad formulation, the tradeoff may be more audible braking and visible dust.

Are Wear Sensors and Installation Hardware Included?

A brake pad wear sensor is not always part of the brake pad set, and not every vehicle uses an electronic sensor. Some pads use a mechanical wear indicator that produces a warning squeal. Other vehicles use a separate electrical sensor that triggers a dashboard message.

Check the product details before ordering:

  • Is the sensor built into the pad, supplied separately, or not included?
  • How many sensors does the vehicle use, and on which wheels?
  • Can the existing sensor be reused, or has it contacted the rotor?
  • Are abutment clips, shims, lubricant, or other hardware included?

If the selected pads do not include the required component, shop the matching brake pad wear sensor separately. If a warning remains after installation, inspect the connector, wiring, routing, and vehicle-specific reset procedure before assuming the new pads are defective.

Should You Replace the Rotors With the Brake Pads?

New pads do not automatically require new rotors, but the rotor surface must be suitable for the new friction material. Inspect the brake rotors for scoring, cracks, heavy rust, heat spots, excessive runout, and thickness below the vehicle manufacturer’s minimum specification. A pulsating pedal or steering-wheel vibration during braking can indicate a rotor or hub-related problem that pads alone may not solve.

Replacing only the pads may be appropriate when the rotors remain within specification and have an acceptable surface. When the rotors are worn, damaged, deeply grooved, or already causing vibration, a matched brake pad and rotor kit can provide the parts for a more complete repair.

Confirm rotor condition before ordering so the vehicle does not remain disassembled while you wait for additional parts.

Uneven Pad Wear Is a Diagnostic Clue

One pad wearing much faster than the others is not normal wear to cover up with a new set. It can indicate dry or seized caliper slide pins, a sticking caliper piston, pads binding in the bracket, damaged hardware, hose restrictions, or corrosion that prevents free movement.

Compare the inner and outer pads on both sides of the axle. Correct the mechanical cause, clean the pad-contact areas, and replace damaged hardware as required. Installing new pads without fixing the source of uneven brake pad wear can shorten pad life and allow the same braking problem to return.

Safety note: Grinding, a soft brake pedal, a fluid leak, pulling during braking, or severely reduced stopping response requires prompt inspection. Do not continue driving if braking performance is unsafe.
