What is a power steering rack & pinion assembly in a car?

When you crank your steering wheel, your car's power steering rack, an assembly, causes your wheels to swivel from side to side. The sort of gears employed in the assembly is where the rack and pinion earned its name. The steering wheel is coupled to a short rack gear by a small pinion gear. A tie rod that joins the steering arm to the spindle is attached to both ends of the rack. Your steering wheel pushes the rack to the right or left as you turn it. The rack and pinion facilitate wheel turning by converting the rotational steering action into the linear motion required to turn the wheels.
